There’ll be other guys... for both of us

The phrase, “It’s not you...it’s me” was never more apt than when my fiancé called off our wedding because, with only two months to go before the event, he told me that he was “85% sure” that he was gay. What’s the correct response to that? What do you say?

I truly had no idea that he was going to leave me, and certainly not to be with another man. Or men. After all, there were no Judy Garland records in his collection to give him away, he showed no fl air with soft furnishings... and I thought my gaydar was pretty fi nely tuned. I mean, I have gay friends and none of them knew (and God knows most of them would be falling over themselves to say, “I told you so”).

In the wake of the announcement canceling the wedding I have had to endure no end of smart comments, the most common of which was, “Here comes the bride...and the bride”. Even my own mother insinuated that I must have ‘turned’ him queer (although I plead my case for being the reason for his 15% of doubt). Plus, she insists, he showed far more interest in the wedding stationery than is “healthy in a normal man.”
