Changing ends

I fell in love with football long before I fell in love with women. Later I understood the value of both and how they fulfilled different needs. I was 21 when my first love Coventry City got to the FA Cup final in 1987, I got two tickets and blew out appeals from my mates to take my girlfriend of two years – Laura. We went down to Wembley early got a bit a drunk, Laura was quiet but seemed okay. We met my mates including Tim who also seemed very quiet. The final whistle went and we jumped for joy as Coventry won 3-2. I turned to Laura and she was just sitting down quietly, thinking she was hurt or scared. I sat down with her, asked what was up. Due to the noise i could not hear what she said, so she shutted in my ear. She had been seeing Tim for a month and the best day in my life was offically over!

We walked in silence back to the pub, as all the Coventry fans around us sang for joy. Laura went home with Tim. I got so drunk I do not know how i got home from London, but my other mates rallied round and got me home.

The plan was to tell me before the match and ask me to swap tickets with Tim as me me and Laura had a better view. Do it in public so I could not make a fuss.

My eldest now goes to school with Laura and Tim’s middle son. My son has a girlfriend now and i have warned him to beware his mates. Do not want history to repeat itself!
